How to Choose a Dining Table? Size, Shape, and Number of People Guide

The dining table is the social center of your home. Family meals, hosting guests, children's homework — all happen around this table. Therefore, choosing a table is not an ordinary furniture decision, but a choice that directly affects the quality of daily life.

Know Your Space First

Before choosing the table, measure the area where the table will be placed accurately. There should be at least 90 cm of space between the dining table and the wall or the nearest furniture. This distance is necessary for the chair to be pulled out comfortably and for easy circulation during service. In larger spaces, 100-120 cm is ideal.

Shape Selection: Round, Rectangular, Oval

Round tables are ideal for intimate conversations. Everyone sits at the same distance, and plates are easily shared. It is the most suitable option for small and medium-sized dining rooms.

Rectangular tables are classic and functional. They are preferred in large dining rooms when you want to accommodate more people. They give the best result when the central axis of the space is distinct.

Oval tables combine the wide capacity of the rectangle with the soft lines of the round. The corners not being sharp is safe for families with children; it is also an aesthetic advantage for the flow of the space.

Size Selection According to Number of People

For standard seating comfort, 60 cm of table edge per person is taken as a basis.

  • For families of 2-4 people: 100-110 cm round or 140 cm rectangular
  • For families of 4-6 people: 120-130 cm round or 180×90 cm rectangular
  • For families of 6-8 people: 140 cm round or 200×100 cm rectangular/oval
  • For families of 8+ people: 220-240×100 cm rectangular/oval

You can check our Size Chart page for a detailed capacity table.

Material Selection

The surface of the dining table is the most critical decision both aesthetically and functionally. Natural stone (marble, travertine) offers timeless elegance, does not lose value over the years, and gains stain resistance with ELIOGARD protection. Wood gives a warmer, organic feel; metallic composite surfaces create a modern and minimalist atmosphere.

At Pah Studio, we combine all these materials in different combinations to produce special pieces. If you want a table tailored to your space and dream, you can submit your request through our Custom Production page.

Chair Height and Compatibility

The standard dining table height is around 75 cm. The chair seat height should be between 45-47 cm. The 28-30 cm difference between them is important for your elbows to rest comfortably on the table and for sufficient space under your legs. Chairs that are too high or too low cause fatigue during long meals.

Lighting is Also Taken into Account

The chandelier or pendant to be hung above the table should be **70-85 cm above** the center point of the table. This distance is ideal for the light to comfortably illuminate the surface and not disturb the eyes of those seated. The diameter of the chandelier should be about one-third of the table width.

Conclusion

The right dining table is a piece that brings the family together for years. When you correctly analyze the space, family structure, and aesthetic preference, this choice becomes both enjoyable and long-lasting.
